GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Christian Nationalism: Christian Nationalism is a political and religious ideology that blends Christian identity, beliefs, and symbolism with nationalist politics. At its core, it asserts that a nation—particularly the United States in most contemporary uses—should be defined by and governed according to a perceived Christian heritage, values, and authority.
Key features often associated with Christian Nationalism include:
Religious Identity as National Identity: It frames Christianity (often a specific Protestant tradition) as central to the cultural, moral, and political foundation of the nation. National belonging is closely tied to being—or at least supporting—Christianity.
Political Agenda: Advocates typically support laws, policies, and cultural norms that align with their interpretation of Christian teachings. This can include positions on issues like education, sexuality, gender roles, abortion, church–state relations, and public religious displays.
Historical Claims: Proponents often argue that the nation was “founded as a Christian nation,” citing selective interpretations of history to justify privileging Christianity in law and culture.
Exclusivity and Power: Christian Nationalism usually emphasizes maintaining political and cultural dominance for Christians (or their interpretation of Christianity), sometimes at the expense of pluralism, secularism, or minority faith traditions.
Distinction from Christianity Alone: Importantly, Christian Nationalism is not the same as personal Christian faith or the general presence of Christians in politics. It is specifically a political ideology that seeks to merge a particular vision of Christianity with state power.
The Seven Mountains, The Seven Mountains Mandate (Dominionism/Dominion Theology): The Seven Mountain Mandate, also known as Seven Mountain Dominionism, is an evangelical Christian movement that believes Christians are called to infiltrate and dominate seven key societal spheres: religion, family, education, government, media, arts & entertainment, and business.
The movement is believed by its followers to have begun in 1975 with a purported message from God delivered to evangelicals ordering them to invade the "seven spheres" of society. The movement came to prominence after the 2013 publication of Invading Babylon: The 7 Mountain Mandate.
The movement was generally supportive of the presidency of Donald Trump. In 2020, (the now deceased) Charlie Kirk said, "finally we have a president that understands the seven mountains of cultural influence" during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Mountain_Mandate. https://www.npr.org/2024/10/24/nx-s1-5009316/charlie-kirk-turning-point-christian-nationalism-trump
